mary anne hobbs

Email interview conducted by Josephine Tempongko (DJ Pandai'a).

Mary Anne Hobbs is arguably experimental music's most seminal figurehead- having hosted BBC Radio 1's Experimental Show (formerly called Breezeblock) for over 10 years, her relentless pursuit of the electronic underground's most ground-breaking and elemental sounds continues to reward the world with an opportunity to hear something that they've never heard before. From her beginnings covering rock music for the NME and Loaded magazine, to her third compilation of future sounds on Planet Mu, Wild Angels, she has made a life of sharing her insatiable passion for music.

This Friday at the Green Elephant, Dallas has the incredible honor of presenting Mary, who will be DJ-ing her incredible arsenal of new music, and she has taken a moment out of her busy tour to answer a few quick questions.

How would you describe the premise of your show in a few words, to anyone who were to ask what it was like? What would someone expect to hear, listening to it for the first time?

The future sound of electronic music.

You've no doubt met people along the way who have influenced or inspired you in one way or another- can you name the people who influenced you at the most pivotal moments in your life and what they taught you?

John Peel is my greatest inspiration...he taught me never to sell out anything you believe in.. trust your instincts, charge at your dreams and never look back..

Every extraordinary life has met with some adversity- and sometimes the worst times in our lives lead us to the most unanticipated successes- what is the best 'worst' thing that ever happened to you? Something that was very challenging at the time, but was a crucial moment in your life?

Running out of knickers on my US tour in September.. lol!! ;) this seems to be a common problem on the road.. I met up with Skream to play in Denver and he was 'commando' (ie without pants) too!

How do you go about choosing the music that you share on your show? Is there always a certain quality that you are looking for, that reflects a general idea or vibe that it is your intention to convey?

It's impossible to put into words.. it's a quality that is embedded deep within the DNA of a tune.. and it touches the very core of your soul.

Since the airing of your 2-hour special Dubstep Warz in January 2006, you have been a champion advocate of the sound ever since. What is it that drew you to dubstep in the first place, and how do you feel about the way the sound and the definition of the word have evolved in the past three and a half years?

It's a music that moves me physically, spiritually and emotionally. It's a sound that moves forward in thousands of scattered steps every day drawing in every conceivable influence.. so it's endlessly inspiring.

You seem to always be digging for the most extraordinary underground electronic music you can find- what does the idea of 'underground music' mean to you in a time when music is so extremely accessible through the internet?

It's a spirit, a freedom, and the signature of an artist who really is the master of his own destiny.

Earlier this Fall you had your first official US tour as a performing DJ. What's the greatest thing you've discovered while touring the US?

The energy and the hunger and the ambition of the American audiences is phenomenal.. it's such a pleasure and a privilege to play here.

What are your top 5 most exciting artists at the moment?

today:

Flying Lotus
Joy Orbison
Sigha
Blue Daisy
James Blake & Airhead

You're about to bring something totally new to Dallas this Friday. What will the crowd experience when MAH steps behind the decks?

A rainbow spectrum of sounds and textures that will lift people to a beautiful space.. I hope.. :)

Both Mary Anne Hobbs and Pandai’a perform at the Green Elephant tonight, along with Blixaboy, VJ S, and Royal Highnuss.

All these recommendations seem to be from London and they are all boring and repetitive. If she thinks thats the future of electronic then I believe she is mistaken.

You guys are funny. The only thing worse than homophobia is homophobia coupled with no taste in music. So congrats on that, 6:44, now do the world a favor and go swallow a knife. To 4:14, if you think those recommendations she made are boring, you need to go back and listen to them again, and this time do it without your head so far up your own ass. But hey, if you think you know more about the direction that music is moving than the natural successor to John Peel, more power to you. Please inform the rest of us what the future of electronic music is... oh wait, you don't have a fucking clue what you're talking about. Thanks anyway though.

Firstly, like I said Sigha was alright. The others were boring. I think the future of electronic music is fully instrumental ambient with a kind of a classical twist and also schizo type drum and bass with a little bit of genre crossing. Some with an almost linear quality to them. Secondly, don't be such a jerk. Thirdly, I have just as much ability to assess the quality of something I hear than anyone on the planet and I think it is obtuse of you to believe that just because someone is in the mainstream and well connected that they are credible or even intelligent. I'm sorry if you feel offended or even like you're being attacked because I don't agree with what you enjoy or consider "good".

8:35 says..2:32 AM

I'm not offended or feeling attacked, and honestly, I didn't know if the Sigha comment was the same person or not. She made five recommendations, you made a comment about "all" of them being from London and boring (um, Flying Lotus is from California), so I assumed it wasn't the same commenter. I like a lot of different music, and I'm digging quite a bit of ambient/modern classical type stuff that's come out this year, but you really think that's gonna catch on with lots of people? It would be great if that happens, but I don't see that working on any big level at all. For most folks, that's music to fall asleep to at best. Drum n bass is dead and has been for years, just stagnating and not progressing at all - hell, there are countless producers who were in that scene for over a decade who have given up and moved on to dubstep and other genres. And obtuse, really? My being on board with Mary Anne Hobbs has absolutely nothing to do with her being on BBC or being "mainstream and well connected". She is one of the key people who started pushing this sound and really blew it up, and the connection that I'm making with her and John Peel is not about with who she works for, it's all about both of them really pushing new music that has almost infinite possibilities as far as the various directions it has already gone and will go next, what influences it's able to easily absorb and incorporate, the appeal it has with tons on people from all different backgrounds, and on and on. You certain have the ability, like anyone else, to listen to and judge music for yourself, but I highly doubt that people from all corners of the globe send you new, unreleased music on a regular basis for you to appraise and then put out there for thousands of others to judge for themselves, which they do and agree with your opinion. Her opinion is vetted every time she gets on the air, and if people weren't into it, she wouldn't have a show, right? I happen to agree with her opinion that dubstep is the future of electronic music, and if you don't see it or hear it, I'm sorry. Wait and see how big dubstep gets in 2010.

anonymous says..10:22 AM

I don't think her radio show is any good. Its so boring. The same thing over and over with all these obnoxious vocal samples and plugs. Fucking horrible.

WZ says..12:39 PM

Mary Anne is far from Mainstream. If you think it's all the same it's because you did not really listen to it. Her show is different every week and she features more than just dubstep. Health did a guest mix for them just a few months ago. I have been listening to her for years. She is by far the most positive supporter of underground electronic music I have ever met. Not a pretentious bone in her body.I don't think Dubstep is the future of electronic music, it is definately a big part of the near future. It all sounds pretty diiferent. If you really investigate the sound you will realize that.

anonymous says..4:20 PM

yeah, while i'm not into drum n bass or dubstep, i get annoyed when people bash it and say it all sounds the same. it will always all sound the same if you don't enjoy it, or if you don't listen to it for nuances of difference. i've heard people say the same about rock music, reggae, blues, country (especially), folk, and any other type of music where they haven't put much effort into wrapping their heads around the genre. i'm not saying that everyone is required to delve into every genre, but at least admit that the reason you're saying "it all sounds the same" is because you haven't spent much time learning about it. you can only get out of it what you put into it. i didn't go to the Mixdown (or whatever) but i have plenty of friends who went and probably had a great time. why begrudge someone that just because you're into something else? maybe if you're opinion had a foundation it would be worth having, but as it is... you're really just admitting your own ignorance to a genre. it's fine that you are ignorant to it, but why shove that in our faces???

WZ says..6:27 PM

Common sense from 4:20pm. cheers to you.

anonymous says..8:36 PM

whatever....dont get your feelings hurt. I listened to one episode of her radio show so if it is what you say it is wz I'll definitely give it more of my time. As far as dubstep goes that is my opinion and my opinion is founded on hours on the lastfm dubstep channel and a little of my own investigation.I definitely enjoy some dubstep. Overall, I feel like in dubstep there is a lot of trash and maybe that is just something you have to deal with in every genre.

wz says..9:29 PM

There is a lot of crap dubstep. I personally like the deeper more experimental stuff. I have a lot of friends that tried digging into Dubstep without guidance and don't get it. I dig the party stuff too, but I prefer the more outer edges that you won't hear unless you know what labels and DJ's to look for. There is a side of Dubstep that is kind of being reffered to as Brostep. This is the banger/wobble stuff that tends to turn people off of the sound. You either dig that stuff or you don't. Check out Boomkat. They know what is up for the Deeper Dubstep and a lot of modern classical minimalist stuff. They post very informative write ups and you can hear audio samples of the releases. Hard Wax in germany is also a good place to find the deeper more experimental techno and Dubstep. Happy Hunting.

WZ says..8:23 PM

or just Wanz....Blaxaboy? Is that really the best you can come up with. You really are just making yourself look like a dumbv redneck dude. We get it. You don't like anything I am associated with so you make fun of me like a 3rd grader at recess. You are really just making yourself look stupid. At least I don't have to hide behind an anonymous veil. I think WZ is pretty obvious. Duh!!!

I learned how to make wobble bass today by syncing the LFO with frequency and changing the rate and amount. Its fun to play around with. Added a low octave sine wave bass for more bass.

WZ says..8:10 AM

It is quite fun. My fave VST's for that are Native Instruments Massive, Rob Papen's Sub Boom Bass and Albino. Although you can also get good wobble from the ableton and reason synths. Of course doing wobble on an actual moog synth can't be beat.

||| says..11:10 AM

Yeah, I use Reason 4. I just got Record recently. It is pretty easy to use and so far seems like a nice addition to Reason. I just started learning how to properly make dub and drum & bass sounds.
